New York's largest grocery store (over 70,000 sq. feet) has just hit the scene - Whole Foods Bowery. It's quite stunning and worth a visit. My favorite part of the store is the fromagerie with delicious cheeses from around the world. sweetriot was there opening day sharing the joys of cacao with all of the rioters and old friends like Will, Errol, Sam, and more.
We're always happy to run into Jacques Torres - he's a total rioter. At the Whole Foods Bowery opening, the rioters spent some time with him discussing our mutual love of chocolate. Yum!
I love New York Moments. These are times when you are in NYC and something is happening around you and you're thinking, "Wow, only in NYC." The other night the Barnum & Bailey Circus came to town....so did the elephants. Zach, thanks for the tip off. Check them out here. (Note - I am not condoning circus treatment of animals -- however, I do have very fond memories as a little girl of enjoying circus delights.)
We were excited to celebrate the 'almost' opening of Whole Foods Bowery tonight. They had a great in-store party to benefit Riverkeepers and Theo, Edna, Geneve, and I were sampling the delicious foods. The store is absolutely beautiful and will be open in just two days. It's the largest grocery store in the NYC and so near to our office - we're excited!
Edna is in the house! Yes, that's right...we have our first full-time Latin on the team. Edna hails from Mexico...the true origin of cacao. We're excited to have her! You can read more about her bio here.
She has lived around the world, believes deeply in eco issues, and is a super positive energy around all of us. She will be busy taking care of customers and rioters big and small. Here are her riot-tation photos above.
While we were in Anaheim for Expo West, an amazing team of rioters was in Michigan for Zingerman's 25th Anniversary celebration (one of our very first customers at sweetriot). My mom, Jason, Shelby, Nickey, and Grace led the way passing out cacao to all who passed. Zingerman's hosted an amazing day long street fair with a few special partners. We were honored to be there! Congrats to Ari, Paul, Grace, Mo, Duff, and the entire team at Zingerman's!
On my way home from Austin, I swung through Florida to see my dad and sister. Luckily, the Winter Park Art Fair was in full swing and we were able to stop by. An up and coming emerging artist was there, Andrew Ina, and he had some creative work. My family was decked out for St Patrick's Day - you'd swear we were Irish! :) (Happy Birthday to my sister too - It's her birthday today!)
One can't avoid being drawn to SxSW in Austin. It's an amazing festival of film, music, and the internet. I've attended in the past and it's a great time. This year I saw some amazing bands (with Jessica and Joe above) including: Dionysos, Sparkle Horse, and Architecture in Helsinki.
My visit to SxSW made me wonder - what makes a great band? There is so much musical talent out there. "So many bands, so little time" is almost the mantra at SxSW. So if time is the issue, you must choose carefully.
The good vs. the great. Here's what made the difference for me.
-- Energy - People pick up on it and want to be a part of it. They follow. AKA, groupies.
-- Audience connection - Do they connect with the audience? One band had a member who kept his
back to the crowd the entire time....hmmm...can you say disconnect?
-- Uniqueness -- do they sound like everyone else or like something you've never heard before?
-- Personality - do you want to hang out with them...do they create intrigue?
Everyone plays good music at SxSW; the list above is about greatness.
One of the highlights of Expo West was the ThinkVitality Fashion Show coordinated by the great folks at Think Products and Whole Foods. The show featured stunning eco-fashion from Under the Canopy, Indigenous Designs, and more! And the rioters were out in force - the sweet of the night was sweetriot! :)
Whew, another big show past. Imagine 4 days of trade show rioting. It's not for the faint of heart. Luckily, we have great new team members (Edna, Geneve,and Theo!), and it makes the rioting go even faster. Our friend and rioter, Sara Snow from Discovery Health, stopped by as well as other rioters who wanted a tattoo - we're serious! Here are a few pictures.
