My grandpa was one of the smartest and most courageous people I have ever known. He taught me about the land, weather, corn, euchre, and much more! He also did not attend college and was self-made and self-educated. I admired him and I continue to admire other farmers for their work ethic, persistence, and natural 'smarts.' I spent a lot of time on his farm growing up as he lived just a corn field away from my house. The first time I went to a cacao farm, it was quite emotional as it reminded me of home - I had not been on a farm since college, and my grandfather is no longer around. Visiting the cacao farm made me remember where I am from and the respect I have for food and the harvests that it takes to create it. After all of a cacao farmer's work, one cacao tree produces only about 1/2 pound of chocolate per year!
